   Canals

   The canal ring is the backdrop most people come to Amsterdam for: water on both sides, arched bridges every fifty metres and gabled houses behind them. Your photographer picks the stretch, since the lanes of De 9 Straatjes and the wide open view at Reguliersgracht give you very different frames.

   Rijksmuseum

   The arched public passage runs straight through the museum building and needs no ticket. The gardens on either side are free and open 9:00 to 18:00 in summer, closing off-season. Stone, symmetry and greenery — the one spot here that is not a canal.

   Magere Brug

   The white wooden bascule bridge over the Amstel at Kerkstraat, between Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht. Pedestrians and cyclists only since 2003, so you can stand on it without traffic. The open river gives you the widest backdrop on this list, and the bridge is lit after dark.

   Centraal Station

   The 19th-century station facade sits at the head of the water, so you get architecture and canal in one frame without walking into the centre. Useful if you are arriving or leaving the same day, and the open forecourt gives you room to stand back.

   Damrak

   The row of narrow houses leaning over the water on the Damrak side is one of the most recognisable views in the city. It is also one of the busiest streets in Amsterdam, so this is a spot your photographer will want to shoot from a particular angle rather than anywhere along it.
